Have you ever thought about bringing your pet into the workplace?

Many families own at least one pet. They have pets for many reasons, not the least of which is that they provide significant emotional value. But have you ever considered the possible benefits of bringing your pet into the workplace? Here are three ideas you might want to give your boss at your next office meeting:

1. help reduce stress

Dogs and cats are often cited as the best animals to help relieve stress. Look into their eyes and suddenly your worries and stress seem to disappear. In fact, according to a 2012 study published in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management, a group of employees in Greensboro, N.C., saw a decrease in work stress levels when their dogs were around them. Conversely, for coworkers who left their pets at home or didn’t have pets at all, work stress levels increased.

2. Encourage longer work hours

Few people want to work long hours. But put a pet in the office and suddenly you have a reason to stick around and get the job done. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, in a 2008 survey of 50 small and large companies, those that allow pets in the workplace not only make employees more willing to work longer hours, but they also make employees miss less work.

3. Increased camaraderie

Let’s face it, everyone has a coworker they have a hard time putting up with. But if you love a cute Labrador Retriever or Ragdoll cat, you suddenly have a common “friend” and something to talk about, and you get along better with your coworkers.

Despite all the potential benefits of bringing your pet to work, there are some important things to consider. For example, you should plan ahead and check with your coworkers and supervisors to make sure it’s not a violation of company policy to bring a furry child into the workplace, and that no one has serious pet allergies. Also, make sure your pet is healthy and safe. Can you bring enough food and water to keep it going throughout the day? Can you keep your pet from disturbing the work area? While pets can bring a lot of benefits, they need the environment to be suitable.
